Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to afford all of that fancy equipment used in the gyms? Well, as nice as it sounds, it just isn’t an option for most people. And since exercise is so important, you need to find exercises that are effective and don’t require any equipment at all.

To make these exercises even more fun, you can blast music while you’re doing them. Some you can even do while watching TV.

Now you have no more excuses! Here are 10 great exercises that you can do at home, without the need for any equipment:

  1. Walking – If the weather is nice, it’s wonderful to get outside and enjoy the scenery around you while you exercise. However, if the weather has other ideas, you can just as easily get an effective walking workout at home. If you have a flight of stairs, go up and down them a few times. (You could even grab a load of laundry as you’re going that way anyway!) This will help to tone up your legs, while getting some low impact aerobic exercise as well. If you don’t have any stairs available, just walk around the house a few times – it may not be very exciting, but it will do the job!
  2. Jumping Jacks – These are always fun, as they bring back memories of being a kid! Who hasn’t done jumping jacks for fun as a child? Well, surprise – they are also great cardio exercises, and good for warming up, too.
  3. Pushups – These are probably not the most favorite exercise of many people, but while they can be hard to do, you can find easier ways to do them. You don’t need to pretend you’re “Rocky”, and do them with one hand; just do what works for you. Do them on your knees, instead of keeping your legs straight. Or, do them standing up against a wall. You will be building up arm strength and working out muscles in your chest area.
  4. Leg Lifts – These are great for building up strength and muscles in your legs. If you find it hard to do the exercises with your legs straight, try bending them slightly.
  5. Crunches – The best exercise for building up and strengthening abdominal muscles. When you’re just getting started, don’t worry about getting your head all the way up. So long as you’re going up until you feel the stretching of the muscles, you will see some benefit.
  6. Jogging In Place – Jogging is a great exercise for your heart. You can jog in place at home while watching TV or listening to music. The only equipment you will require is a good pair of shoes, to eliminate any stress to your legs.
  7. Squats – These are wonderful exercises for your legs and buttocks. You can even just try these by sitting and standing up again from a regular chair, if you’re finding them to be too difficult. As long as you’re able to do a few repetitions, you will be providing some benefit to your body.
  8. Light Weight Lifting – No, you don’t need to go out and buy expensive weights for this! Just use whatever you can find in your house. Start out with something lighter, such as a can of peas, and work yourself up to heavier items. You can use milk jugs, laundry detergent bottles or even water jugs.
  9. Dancing – Dancing is a wonderful exercise, which is great for your heart. Not only that, but it can lift your spirits as well, and give your overall feeling a boost.
  10. Step Exercises – Using the steps in your home, you can do repetitions which will tone your leg muscles. (Just remember to be careful!)

Getting some exercise is important, but you don’t need to go out and join a gym, paying a large amount in membership fees each month. You don’t even need the expensive equipment in order to give your body an effective workout. Use what you have in your house, and work out in the comfort of your home. You will be more likely to keep up with the exercises when you’re comfortable, so just get up and start exercising!

What Equipment Do You Need For Yoga?

Actually you don’t need much to start   doing yoga; I’d say you only need a good mat. That’s all. But… Sometimes, just to make the practice more convenient, or to enhance it, we can use various props and wear particular clothes. If you feel like having the mat only is not enough for you, then go on reading, since we’re going to dive into the most popular and needed yoga gear the majority of students use. You can consider it to be a kind of a yoga equipment checklist for beginners, or something.

What Do You Need For a Yoga Class?

 

  • A Yoga Mat

Among the things you need for yoga class a yoga mat is the most essential. Alternatively, you can have a blanket or a yoga towel, which is also popular in Hot or Bikram yoga.

Yoga mats are made of various materials; the better the material is the more expensive the mat. The same is true for the mat’s size: if you want something bigger and thicker, you will have to pay more. But, there is no need to have a huge mat, because it will be difficult to carry it with you to a yoga studio. You can have it at home, of course, but still I think it is not always very practical. You need to get the right mat thickness, as for the size – just let it cover the whole area on the floor where your body lays.

It’s great to have a natural, Eco friendly yoga mat, but such mats are usually quite expensive – can be over $40.

As in the case with mats, the skidless yoga towels also come in various types, materials and prices. Sometimes, a quality towel costs more than a good mat.

Now, although I said that there is no need to get a huge and expensive mat, it doesn’t mean you need to get a cheap trifle. No, a mat is essential and it will be with you during your practice for years! So get a really good one you like and feel comfortable to practice on it.

  • Only a Mat? Oh, Wait!

Actually, there is something else your mat needs: it is either a yoga mat bag or a carrying strap. You will need them to transport your mat to a class. A bag protects your mat from dust, but a strap is easy to use and fast to make your mat ready for the practice. Some mat straps can also be used to aid your practice, which is an additional benefit.

  • What’s Next? Yoga Apparel

The next most important thing after the mat is the yoga apparel. The first thing to look at is the natural material like cotton or linen; also the clothes should be loose enough to allow free movement in various poses. Yoga practice involves flexibility and wide range motions, so make sure you get yoga pants and shirts to facilitate this.

Instead of pants you may want to get leggings – they are fine as long as they are suitable for doing yoga poses. Instead of t-shirts you can have yoga tops, which often are pretty convenient. Some of them have built-in secure bras to provide an appropriate support for female students during their practice.

The next are the yoga socks and gloves (or yoga paws). Actually I prefer to do yoga barefoot and with nothing on my hands. But if you are not into displaying these parts of your body, or it’s just a bit cold in the room you practice in, then you can get a special socks and gloves that provide an adequate grip. Also there are yoga shoes, which can be great to wear in a studio, especially during winter.

  • Yoga Straps and Blocks

Now is the turn for yoga props, namely straps and blocks. These are good for beginners, since the serve to provide “extra arms” and an additional support. “Extra arms” means that when you don’t have enough flexibility to do a pose, you can use a yoga strap to extend your arms. The similar thing is with the yoga blocks – for example, when you do the triangle pose (Trikonasana), and cannot reach the floor with your hand, you can have a block under it to place the palm over. Often these props are recommended for beginners since they not only compensate for your lack flexibility, but also provide extra safety.

Other props include yoga bolsters or yoga pillows, bands, rollers, belts (the same or slightly different from the straps), yoga balls, sandbags. Basically, all these belong to so called ‘optional yoga equipment’.

Is There Any Difference Between Yoga Equipment For Men And For Women?

Not really; the major stuff is the same. The difference is in the apparel of course: pants, t-shirts, socks, etc. But when it comes to mats, straps, bolsters, blocks – all are the same.

When you consider buying yoga supplies, start with the essential gear like a mat and clothes; if after a while you’ll feel like you need some more stuff to aid your practice, then go and get what’s required. But personally, I think there is no need to buy every piece of yoga gear at once. Chances are you won’t use all the things, some will be collecting dust. So start with the most essential yoga equipment for beginners, and proceed to get more if needed.

I hope I made it clear about what you need to start yoga. The main thing, of course, is your desire to go on, and the ability to be regular and gradual in your practice.

As you can see from the above picture the watch is just like a regular watch, except instead of telling you the time, this watch tells you your heart rate. The watch uses a band that is placed just below your chest in order to read your heart rate. The idea of the heart rate monitor is that it ensures that your heart rate is high enough to be burning calories and getting fit when working out.

Believe it or not, video games can also be used in order to help you to get fit! The introduction of the Wii, has enabled people to play active video games. This is very appealing to people because, we feel your almost getting fit while having fun at the same time! In fact, Wii have brought out a special game that is aimed at just those who are trying to get fit and want to get fit. This game is called Wii fit.

The Wii fit package comes with a board and the actual game itself. You as the user have to copy the exercises that is shown up on-screen. The game also keeps track of the progress you are making so that the exercises will get slightly more difficult each time you use the game. The reason for this is so that the user will get slightly fitter each time they use the game. There are numerous other games that on the Wii that will help you get fit but Wii fit would the main one.

Another way in which people can use Technology to get fit/ healthy is by using websites that are aimed at doing exactly that. For example Microsoft’s Health Vault( Link posted below) is a good website for this

Obviously Microsoft’s Health Vault can be used for lots of things, but getting healthy is one of them. They also have a section on quitting smoking if anyone is interested. The website would be a great way of keeping track of what exercises you’re doing and at what level you’re doing them at. You can also use it to keep track of your diet and record your heart rate and your blood pressure and things like that. Another excellent site to help you get fit or lose weight would be You-Tube. There are thousands of fitness videos on you tube. There are ones with different levels of difficulties for different types of fitness levels so everyone’s needs are catered for. All you have to do is find one that is suited for your need and follow the instructions of that one.

College basketball is a game of tradition. Players Sports Bar — San Diego, California

Players tops the list of the best sports bars in California, which is no small feat given the huge number of places where one can catch a game in the Golden State. However, San Diego gets high marks because of its proximity to one of the best emerging college basketball programs in the nation (San Diego State University). Players, though, gets high marks not for its local clientele, but for the fact it always keeps some of its large number of TV screens tuned to games from the Universities of Missouri, Texas, Illinois, and North Carolina, giving visitors and people who move to San Diego a little taste of home. Walk-On’s — Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Located within stumbling distance of LSU’s Pete Maravich Center, Walk-On’s is a local chain of sports bars named after three LSU walk-ons (two of who happen to be the bars’ owners.)  Walk-On’s is perfect for getting some postgame grub because of its proximity to campus and because it prides itself on being a center of food and fun for all LSU sports fans. Kaohsiung, March 13 (CNA) Former MLB star Manny Ramirez began training with the players of the EDA Rhinos in Kaohsiung on Wednesday, a day after signing a one-year contract with the team.

Ramirez was introduced to his Rhinos teammates by manager Hsu Sheng-ming and was reunited with Hu Chin-lung, his teammate with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2008 to 2010.

He then swatted a few home runs in batting practice off pitches thrown by Hsu after having trouble getting acclimating to the team’s mechanical pitching machine.

Ramirez said he felt OK after the workout and expected to gradually round into peak form.

He will not be able to play in any of the team’s pre-season exhibition games because his work permit is still being processed, Hsu said, but the manager expected the permit to be approved by the Rhinos’ first regular season home game on March 27.

Hsu said the Rhinos, one of four teams in Taiwan’s Chinese Professional Baseball League, did not sign Ramirez just to help the team win and boost ticket sales but also to help raise the league’s quality and attract higher caliber foreign players to the country.

The 40-year-old Ramirez signed a one-year contract with the team that reportedly will pay him between NT$750,000 (US$25,000) and NT$800,000 a month.

Ramirez, who began in the major leagues with the Cleveland Indians in late 1993, slugged 555 home runs in the majors, ranking 14th all-time, and hit .312 for his career.

He was also named the World Series MVP after leading the Boston Red Sox in 2004 to their first championship since 1918.

His career was overshadowed, however, by two suspensions for using performance-enhancing drugs. He was suspended twice after failing to pass drug tests in 2009 and 2011.

Ramirez arrived Monday evening amid renewed enthusiasm for the sport in Taiwan, following Taiwan’s best run ever in the World Baseball Classic.

As many as 15.54 percent of all households with cable tuned in to Taiwan’s game against Japan on March 8, according to a user lab under the Institute for Information Industry and the Cloud and Connect TV Forum, based on information provided by two domestic cable operators.

The rating, reported Wednesday, was considered to be exceptionally high in a country where the media market is highly segmented.

Taipei, March 20 (CNA) Asia’s largest bike show opened Wednesday in Taipei, attracting over 1,000 exhibitors who are expected to generate over US$300 million in business, organizers said.

The Taipei International Cycle Show has attracted 1,103 exhibitors from 36 countries, over a quarter of whom are foreign exhibitors, Wang Chih-kang, chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), said at the opening ceremony of the show.

A total of 7,000 international buyers are estimated to attend the show that will run till March 23, he said.

“Taiwan has become the supply center of the world’s high-end bicycles,” he said, highlighting the country’s strength in the research, development and branding of bicycles.

The export value of Taiwanese bicycles reached US$1.8 billion in 2012, up 8.68 percent from a year earlier, while the total export value of bicycles and bicycle parts touched US$2.73 billion in 2012, an increase of 11.74 percent from the previous year, according to TAITRA, Taiwan’s main trade promotion body.

Taiwan also exported 94,200 bikes valued at US$45.29 million to China last year, a significant growth of 179 percent and 158 percent, respectively, from 2011, TAITRA said.

Wang attributed the growth to a reduction of tariff barriers in bicycle trade since the 2010 Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement between Taiwan and China took effect.

He said the Taipei bike show is currently Asia’s largest and among the top three in the world, and expressed hope that the show will become the world’s largest, after construction is completed on a new exhibition hall near the current venue at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall.

He added that the show is also expected to boost business in the tourism, transportation and communications sectors.


Anthony Lo, chairman of the Taiwan Bicycle Exporters’ Association, said Taiwan should continue its efforts to become a “cycling island” by continuing to research and develop high-quality bike products, improving its cycling environment and transforming its cities into low carbon cities.

Currently, over 25,000 people use the Youbike system — a bike rental system in Taipei — every day, Lo said, adding that the number of bikes under the program is expected to increase from around 1,500 to over 5,500 by July this year, benefiting over 10 million riders in the city each year.

Youbike was launched by the Taipei city government in 2009 and allows registered users to use their “Easy Card” prepaid transport cards to rent the bikes for free for the first half hour of rental, after which they are charged.

Vice President Wu Den-yih said the government is determined to support Taiwan’s bicycle industry and urged the Ministry of Economic Affairs to accelerate the construction of the new exhibition hall.

The four-day show will showcase a diverse range of bicycles, bicycle accessories, sportswear and other bicycle and sports-related products.

Forums will also be organized to discuss the latest breakthroughs in motors, batteries and emerging market trends and how to transform Taiwan into a “cycling island.”

An international expo showcasing sports textiles and accessories will also be held March 20-23 in Taipei, while an international sporting goods show and an international diving and water sports show will take place March 19-22.

At the opening ceremony, Wu also presented awards to the four gold award winners of the Taipei Cycle d&i awards, jointly organized by TAITRA and Taiwan Bicycle Exporters’ Association and executed by iF International Forum Design GmbH for the second time.

The gold award winners include an innovative full carbon wheel set, a cycle shoe insole, child’s bicycle seat and bicycle brake caliper.

The annual event, now in its 26th year, will take place at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall and Hall 1.
