Taipei, March 20 (CNA) Asia’s largest bike show opened Wednesday in Taipei, attracting over 1,000 exhibitors who are expected to generate over US$300 million in business, organizers said.

The Taipei International Cycle Show has attracted 1,103 exhibitors from 36 countries, over a quarter of whom are foreign exhibitors, Wang Chih-kang, chairman of the Taiwan External Trade Development Council (TAITRA), said at the opening ceremony of the show.

A total of 7,000 international buyers are estimated to attend the show that will run till March 23, he said.

“Taiwan has become the supply center of the world’s high-end bicycles,” he said, highlighting the country’s strength in the research, development and branding of bicycles.

The export value of Taiwanese bicycles reached US$1.8 billion in 2012, up 8.68 percent from a year earlier, while the total export value of bicycles and bicycle parts touched US$2.73 billion in 2012, an increase of 11.74 percent from the previous year, according to TAITRA, Taiwan’s main trade promotion body.

Taiwan also exported 94,200 bikes valued at US$45.29 million to China last year, a significant growth of 179 percent and 158 percent, respectively, from 2011, TAITRA said.

Wang attributed the growth to a reduction of tariff barriers in bicycle trade since the 2010 Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement between Taiwan and China took effect.

He said the Taipei bike show is currently Asia’s largest and among the top three in the world, and expressed hope that the show will become the world’s largest, after construction is completed on a new exhibition hall near the current venue at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall.

He added that the show is also expected to boost business in the tourism, transportation and communications sectors.

Anthony Lo, chairman of the Taiwan Bicycle Exporters’ Association, said Taiwan should continue its efforts to become a “cycling island” by continuing to research and develop high-quality bike products, improving its cycling environment and transforming its cities into low carbon cities.

Currently, over 25,000 people use the Youbike system — a bike rental system in Taipei — every day, Lo said, adding that the number of bikes under the program is expected to increase from around 1,500 to over 5,500 by July this year, benefiting over 10 million riders in the city each year.

Youbike was launched by the Taipei city government in 2009 and allows registered users to use their “Easy Card” prepaid transport cards to rent the bikes for free for the first half hour of rental, after which they are charged.

Vice President Wu Den-yih said the government is determined to support Taiwan’s bicycle industry and urged the Ministry of Economic Affairs to accelerate the construction of the new exhibition hall.

The four-day show will showcase a diverse range of bicycles, bicycle accessories, sportswear and other bicycle and sports-related products.

Forums will also be organized to discuss the latest breakthroughs in motors, batteries and emerging market trends and how to transform Taiwan into a “cycling island.”

An international expo showcasing sports textiles and accessories will also be held March 20-23 in Taipei, while an international sporting goods show and an international diving and water sports show will take place March 19-22.

At the opening ceremony, Wu also presented awards to the four gold award winners of the Taipei Cycle d&i awards, jointly organized by TAITRA and Taiwan Bicycle Exporters’ Association and executed by iF International Forum Design GmbH for the second time.

The gold award winners include an innovative full carbon wheel set, a cycle shoe insole, child’s bicycle seat and bicycle brake caliper.

The annual event, now in its 26th year, will take place at the Taipei World Trade Center Nangang Exhibition Hall and Hall 1.

Taichung, released by TAITRA on November 7th— The 2013 Taipei International Sporting Goods Show (TaiSPO) will take place concurrently with the 26th TAIPEI CYCLE in celebration of its 40th anniversary, TAITRA, the show’s organizer, said. A 5-day extravaganza will begin as the 40th TaiSPO opens on next March 19th, one day earlier than 2013 TAIPEI CYCLE, and will be held in conjunction with Taiwan Int’l Diving & Water Sports Show (DiWaS) and Taipei Int’l Sports Textile & Accessory Expo. The scale is estimated to feature a record-breaking 5,000 booths, attracting more than 8,000 domestic and international buyers.

TaiSPO represents a consistent effort to turn Taiwan into Asia’s hub for sporting goods industry. While the competition of sporting goods industry is getting intense, Peter Lo, chairman of Johnson Health Tech Co. and convener of the Division of Fitness Equipment and Accessories under the Taiwan Sporting Goods Manufacturers Association (TSMA), founded the S-Team. Offering joint consultancy by TSMA, the Footwear & Recreation Technology Research Institute and the Corporate Synergy Development Center, the S-Team will hopefully establish a cooperative network made up of central, satellite and supporting factories, so Taiwanese fitness equipment makers can adopt a business model that is based on brand-specific sales channels in addition to research, development, and innovation (RDI) programs. The S-Team, founded in May 2011, has successfully introduced a national standard of fitness equipment this October and plans to set up a dedicated pavilion at TaiSPO 2013, as it did this year. It will showcase exciting results of a year’s efforts, as well as refreshing contributions to the industry.

While TaiSPO is an indicator of trends in the sporting goods industry, the TaiSPO Awards of Excellence gives a sneak peek at the latest and most innovative products in the sporting goods industry. According to the list of preliminary winners published online, 14 products are nominated in the TaiSPO Awards of Excellence 2013.

After 40 years of progress, TaiSPO stands as the second largest sporting goods show in Asia, a world-class trade event which has been also in good connection with the WFSGI to hold Manufactures Forum for consecutive 4 years. In appreciation of the support over the years, Taitra, the TaiSPO organizer, launches a special event, called “TaiSPO 40th Anniversary Lucky Draw”. Buyers, who have completed online pre-registration at http://www.taispo.com.tw by March 1st, 2013, will be auto-entered in the Lucky Draw.

The TaiSPO 2013 will run from March 19th-22nd at Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) Exhibition Halls 1 and 3,Taipei, Taiwan, including fitness equipment, sportswear and accessories, outdoor sporting goods, sports balls, protective gear, massage equipment, and more. In 2013, the Taiwan International Diving and Water Sports Show (DiWaS) will also offer an integrated display of swimming, diving, and water sports supplies as a part of TaiSPO for the second consecutive year. The 5-day celebration is definitely a must-see as it includes the TAIPEI CYCLE and SpoMODE, scheduled for March 20th-23rd, 2013, at TWTC Exhibition Hall 1and the Nangang Exhibition Hall.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Calif. – Outdoor Retailer (OR) has announced plans to adjust show dates for its Winter Market 2013 tradeshow. Instead of starting with the All Mountain Demo at Solitude Mountain Resort on Wednesday and continuing indoors at the Salt Palace Convention Center Thursday through Sunday, attendees will hit the slopes on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 and continue with the indoor portion, Wednesday, January 23 through Saturday, January 26.

Held in Salt Lake City, Winter Market is the largest gathering of winter outdoor products and services geared for retailers in the nation.

“Any event during the season that takes retailers out of their stores is always a balancing act between having the opportunity to see new products and make buying decisions weighed against being in the store making sales,” said Kenji Haroutunian, vice president at Nielsen Expositions and OR show director. “By shifting to a Tuesday-Saturday format, retailers will be able to get back to their shops for part of the weekend, while still keeping the current duration that such a large show demands.”

Lodging already secured for Winter Market through Travel Planners, Outdoor Retailer’s official 2013 housing partner, will be automatically updated to reflect the new show dates. Communications and confirmations about those changes will be forthcoming.

The Board of Directors for Snow Sports Industries America (SIA) has announced a shift in SIA Snow Show dates to an earlier mid-January time slot beginning in 2013. The Snow Show will begin on Saturday, January 12th and run through Tuesday, January 15th at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colorado. The On-Snow Demo will follow the Show at Winter Park Resort and Devil’s Thumb Ranch on January 16th and 17th.

In 2014, the SIA Snow Show will follow the same mid-January pattern and begin on Saturday January 11th through Tuesday, January 14th followed by the On-Snow Demo on January 15th and 16th. This mid-January/Saturday start will be used for all future Snow Show dates. SIA will be working closely with buying groups, regional rep associations and retailer associations to make this transition as smooth as possible.

The Board’s decision came after analysis of the industry’s current buy/sell cycle, changing production lead times, as well as date conflicts with major holidays and trade events including an overlap with ISPO beginning in 2012. Given all of the factors and constituencies SIA’s Board had to consider, the goal was to provide Show dates that would benefit the majority of the industry.

”In 2002, the SIA Snow Show was moved from March to January with the goal of creating a national show to kick off the buy/sell cycle where retailers could truly ‘See it, Try it, Buy It’. With the increase in private line previews, regional and national trade shows, the Board of Directors felt the Show needed to adjust to changes in the marketplace,” commented David Ingemie, SIA’s president.

The SIA Snow Show, January 31- February 3,  2013  at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, CO, will deliver the largest, most concentrated and authentic trade event in the snow sports industry. It will be the first time globally that the styles, technologies, innovations, culture and energy of snow sports for 13.14 will be presented. Industry professionals will meet to engage in business, networking opportunities, parties, brand events and seminars to feel the true essence of snow sports.
